Get Ticked, Or Not?

I was feeding Shane (my son) some dinner this evening, and it just so happened to be one of those picky and crabby feastings.  ”Oh, you are sick of the delicious honey smoked turkey?  How about these crackers that you normally love - no?  Tuna?  You just spit it out…  Guess not.  Juice?  Only a sip, now you are crabby again.  Baked beans?  Yes!”

So the baked beans hit the spot.  Afterwards I gave him some pears, but that only lasted a few spoonfuls. He was done for the evening.  As I was putting the lid back on the pear jar, being already a little frustrated about the challenges of dinner, the lid slipped out of my hands and the surprisingly large amount of mashed pear that was stuck to the underside of the lid flew all over when the lid hit the floor.

Initial reaction was to get upset and frustrated.  However, the thought crossed my mind that mad or not, there’s still pears all over the floor.  I decided not to get mad, and I just cleaned it up and continued on with what needed to be done.  It was so refreshing to think that I could have been mad, but now I wasn’t.

Oh the little things that we choose to get mad about, and isn’t it crazy to think that getting mad only makes the situation worse for everyone involved?

So true. But for the grace of God, we’d always choose mad; the path of least resistance in our hearts.
