Discipleship and Mentoring

Should we all be mentored or discipled by somebody?  Should we all have a disciple(s) of our own?  I think to a degree (depending on what exactly you consider discipleship to be) that the answer to both these questions should be a bold “yes.”

What exactly does it mean to disciple someone?  The dictionary says, “guide (someone) in becoming a follower of Jesus…”  To say that we don’t need that is to say that you already follow Jesus perfectly, doesn’t it?  There is much to learn, and many to teach.

How do we go about doing it though?  To make a more complex answer really short, I think we ought to be looking for people to teach, willing to teach if asked, and also willing to pursue a teacher.  In my experience, I have never had anyone approach me who was interested in mentoring me.  I have had to seek out and ask others to mentor me.  But, I really wish someone, or many throughout my younger years, would have asked to guide me.

How important do you see discipleship?  I’d love to hear some of your feedback on the topic, as well as stories where discipleship has greatly benefitted you.

Great thoughts, Josh. Discipleship is important enough for Christ to call it out during The Great Commission so it must carry a significant amount of weight.

I have also grown to see a difference between the purpose of mentoring and that of discipleship. Mentoring, from what I have seen, rarely has an intention of reproduction. Whereas people who are doing discipleship do it with the intent and hope that those who they are discipling will do the same. Jesus implied this in verse 20 of The Great Commission: “and teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you.” If you are teaching people to obey everything Christ has commanded you, it includes that command for the person receiving your teaching.

To me, that is where mentoring and discipleship differ. Mentoring tends to have a 1:1 type mentality without reproduction in mind where one of the main aims of discipleship is reproduction of more disciples.

Jake - Great differentiation between mentoring and discipleship. Thanks for that.
