When you hear “fresh fruit”, what do you think of? I tend to have a different view of this term than most, and I would like to present my case as to why.
Most people refer to any fruit that you can buy at the grocery store that isn’t canned or frozen as fresh fruit. But what then would you call a bowl of strawberries that were just picked moments ago from the patch? That’s what I call fresh fruit.
Most of the fruit in a grocery store has been sitting in crates and traveling in trucks for some time. If it takes an orange a week or longer to go from picked to purchased, how is that still “fresh fruit”?
I am arguing that “fresh fruit” be reserved for fruit that has been recently picked. You would rather have a grape fresh from the vine than a grape that was gathered, bagged, and shipped across the country in a truck right? Well, then we need to reserve the term “fresh fruit”, which sounds so delicious, for fruit that truly is fresh.
So, my proposal for proper terms is this:
- Fresh Fruit: Just picked from the tree/vine.
- Fruit: The stuff you buy in the grocery store that isn’t canned or frozen.
- Canned Fruit: Fruit in a can or jar.
- Frozen Fruit: Obvious.
